What I believe to be another victim of the semi final structure this act I felt had the potential to do very well on the night. It is probably the right time to highlight a fact that is a little unfair - most songs that win are performed in English. While it is not a requirement to perform in English, and while there have been acts as we have already seen that have performed in their native language and won, the majority of acts have won by performing in English.
29 to be precise. French is the second most common at 14 winners, joint third is Dutch and Hebrew with 3 winners each. 5 other languages have won twice and 4 have won once. Singing in your native language is a risk in the contest which often leads acts to either outright perform in English or to incorporate English lyrics or an English chorus. You could argue that is one of the reasons this act did not make it through. It is also the reason why I don't believe Spain will do very well this year as their entry is in Spanish. I find it beautiful but it helps that I can understand the lyrics.
While the entry itself was performed in Macedonian, I have linked two videos below, the first is the Macedonian version and the second is a subsequent English version that was released after the contest. I do wonder how well it would have done if they had performed in English instead.
