Eurovision Top 30: Number 24

Artist: Emmelie de Forest
Song title: Only Teardrops
Year: 2013
Country: Denmark
Place: 1st

Our second and last Danish entry in our list is the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, Emmelie de Forest with Only Teardrops, a track which I was not expecting to win. The winner each year is not always predictable. Countries often fall into the trap of picking an act that they like, without considering whether anyone else will. Being a number 1 selling artist in your own country is impressive but it means nothing when you go beyond its borders.

To win at Eurovision you need to appeal to a wider audience and here in the UK we have fallen into the trap of sending acts that would do well in our charts without considering whether they can actually appeal to European voters. The same is often true in reverse, because so many countries now compete it's possible for acts to win that we don't like at all. This entry surprised me for that reason, while many people might have liked it, I was not expecting so many people in the rest of Europe to actually vote for it. Likewise this year Spain have a song for 2015 that I am quite fond of but I do not expect it to do well at all and I will be very surprised [pleasantly] if it does.
