Best Game Soundtrack

When it comes to Video Game Soundtracks there are many that I could choose from, I struggled to pick one that is the best of all time so instead chose the one I am most obsessed with at the moment and that is the soundtrack to Kingdom: Two Crowns composed by Amos Roddy.

Certain game genres really appeal to me, and whilst I always come back to the classic platformer and action type games, I do have a passion for resource management games. They come in all shapes and sizes, and whilst Idle Games take resource management over time and make it quite passive, when it comes to active play I prefer games that involve an element of strategy.

Kingdom was first released in 2013 as a flash game, I did not play the game until it was eventually released on Steam as Kingdom: Classic, where my love of the series began. There have been multiple iterations since, but the one that stands out most is Kingdom: Two Crowns. Across all iterations the core mechanic is the same with minor variations. The plot revolves around a Monarch of some form who establishes a settlement, accumulates wealth over time, and uses that wealth in the form of coins or gems to upgrade the settlement.

Most nights in the game the main protagonist "The Greed" a race of destructive spirits attracted to wealth come an attack the settlement. The art style is simple, a 2D side-scrolling game that stretches to the left and right of the central settlement. It's easy to sit down and start playing any game in the series, blink, and 7 hours have passed because you have been engrossed in the "five more minutes and I'll stop" mentality.

The music of the Kingdom series has a particular set of requirements to meet, first to establish ambience, second to fill the silence, and third to build tension when needed and relieve it in tow. This kind of music which compliments gameplay but doesn't distract from it is the type of music I find myself drawn to whenever I have to work or study and need something in the background to drowned out all the distractions and help me focus.

Of all the tracks in the soundtrack, my particular favourite is Mischievous Alchemy which is instantly recognizable and now inseparable from the game to me.
